Beauty By The Sea Project
The Beauty By The Sea Project is designed with a strong focus on corporate engagement, aiming to secure the involvement of corporate partners in supporting individuals and businesses in the aquaculture sector through the Blue Economy startup Studio. The strategy includes leveraging existing networks to identify and onboard corporate partners from both Canada and Europe, as well as facilitating the establishment of multi-year sourcing contracts to ensure long-term industry support.
The Beauty By The Sea project is set to launch with a diverse series of events, both online and offline, designed to explore the role of the blue economy in the cosmetics industry and beyond. Beginning in November, a series of webinars will introduce participants to marine ingredients and their applications in cosmetic formulations, packaging, and sustainability. The first webinar, scheduled for November 14th, will provide an overview of the blue economy, focusing on brands that use marine-based ingredients and their commitment to supporting sustainable practices.
This introductory session will cover a range of topics, from raw marine materials used in cosmetics to innovative bioplastics and plastic additives derived from marine sources. Attendees will gain insight into the environmental benefits of embracing the blue economy, such as its potential to reduce carbon footprints and improve global ecological health. Additionally, the session will delve into aquaculture, offering a closer look at how the farming of kelps, algae, and oysters can be both sustainable and regenerative for the environment. These insights will highlight the importance of formulating cosmetics with marine ingredients, offering both ecological and economic benefits.
In December, the project will partner with Macro Oceans to deliver an in-depth formulating webinar, focusing on their signature marine-derived ingredient, sugar kelp. This webinar will guide participants through the process of incorporating sugar kelp into skincare, haircare, and other beauty formulations, demonstrating its versatility and environmental advantages. Attendees will learn how to create formulas containing 40-80% marine-based content, highlighting the profitability of using such ingredients while also fostering sustainable business practices. This session will also touch on water conservation, explaining how formulating with eco-friendly ingredients can ensure that products re-entering the water cycle after use minimize environmental harm. Practical advice will be provided for brands, large and small, on how to integrate blue economy principles into their supply chains without incurring high costs.
These initial webinars are just the beginning of the Beauty By The Sea project’s broader vision. In 2025, the project will move from virtual to in-person events, beginning with a major event in Toronto. This gathering will feature a live formulation session and an interactive exploration of marine-based ingredients, set against the backdrop of Ripley’s Aquarium. By holding the event at this venue, participants will have the unique opportunity to experience firsthand the ecosystems from which these ingredients are sourced, gaining a tangible understanding of their environmental significance and the importance of preserving marine biodiversity.
A similar in-person event will take place in Vancouver in February 2025, in collaboration with the Pacific Seaweed Industry Association. This event will mark the introduction of the Canadian Seaweed Network, a new initiative aimed at connecting seaweed growers with industries across Canada, including cosmetics, food, textiles, and construction. This partnership with the Pacific Seaweed Industry Association has already laid the groundwork for significant collaboration, with Mark Smith from the association playing a key role in the project’s early success. These events will showcase the vast potential of marine ingredients across multiple sectors, with cosmetics serving as a relatable platform for demonstrating the versatility and value of these resources.
In the coming year, the Beauty By The Sea project will continue to host events in partnership with the Pacific Seaweed Industry Association, with a strong focus on promoting and commercializing opportunities within aquaculture. The project’s overarching goal is to help companies connect with seaweed growers, assist ingredient companies in prototyping, and link them to labs for testing and development, all while fostering growth and success within the industry.

Our Projects Together
A central component of the project is the creation of a dynamic marketplace within the Blue Economy Startup Studio, which will enable individuals and small businesses to co-sell marine raw materials and scale their operations. This marketplace will be tailored to the needs of small to mid-scale aquaculture operations and will be supported by tools and resources designed to help participants scale efficiently. A key feature of this marketplace is the integration of the ChemBox for marine ingredients and packaging, which will showcase innovative marine-based raw materials and sustainable packaging solutions, serving as a valuable resource for brands seeking to incorporate marine elements into their products. Training and development are also critical to the success of the Blue Economy Beauty Project. The project will focus on developing B2B-centered training programs that educate companies and investors on the potential and future of the blue economy, with a particular emphasis on regenerative aquaculture. This will involve the creation of digital training modules covering key aspects of the blue economy, as well as organizing week-long intensive onsite training sessions that combine theory with practical experience. Intrapreneurial methodologies will be introduced to guide participants through customized business journeys within the regenerative business landscape. To enhance the global impact of the project, efforts will be made to build and strengthen international partnerships that support the mission of the Blue Economy Beauty Project. Relationships will be established with international clusters and networks to expand the reach of the Blue Economy Startup Studio, fostering cross-border collaborations that further the project's objectives.
A comprehensive marketing campaign will be launched to raise awareness about the blue economy and attract investors to the Blue Economy Startup Studio. This campaign will include the development of a strategic marketing plan that highlights the benefits and opportunities of the blue economy. The Beauty and the Sea Forum will serve as a flagship event to promote regenerative aquaculture initiatives and the Blue Economy Startup Studio, featuring expert panels, product showcases, and networking opportunities. Additionally, the Blue Economy Startup Studio will be promoted through digital channels, industry events, and partnerships with relevant organizations. The implementation plan for the project involves clearly defined roles and responsibilities. The Canadian Cosmetic Cluster will be responsible for engaging corporate partners, promoting the marketplace, leading the development of training programs, and managing the ChemBox for marine Ingredients and packaging. Le Paysan Marin will provide expertise in aquaculture, support the development of training systems, coordinate onsite training sessions in France, and contribute to the organization and execution of the Beauty and the Sea Forum.
The governance of the project will be overseen by a steering committee composed of representatives from the Canadian Cosmetic Cluster and Le Paysan Marin. This committee will be responsible for overseeing the project's implementation, addressing challenges, and ensuring that objectives are met. Additionally, a reporting and monitoring system will be developed to track the progress and outcomes of the Blue Economy Beauty Project, with regular updates shared with stakeholders, partners, and investors to ensure transparency and continuous improvement.
