Uniting Canadian Cosmetics and Bringing it to the World
Maneuver Men's Grooming is more than just a brand; it's a movement born from personal struggle and a desire to create meaningful change in the beauty industry. Founded by a former firefighter trainee, Udrea Russell who faced the common yet frustrating challenge of razor bumps. Maneuver was created to provide tailored grooming solutions for men and women of color. Some of their most popular products being the Hair Growth Oil, the Razor Bump Spray and Ingrown Hair Exfoliator. The brand’s mission goes beyond skincare; it’s about empowering a community, creating a space where individuals can feel confident and take pride in their appearance while stepping into leadership roles within their communities. Founder, Udrea Russell with his family. 1. What is the story behind the brand?
The story behind Maneuver Men's Grooming is rooted in personal experience and a desire to create solutions for the unique grooming challenges faced by men and women of color. While training to become a firefighter, I struggled with razor bumps—a common issue due to our hair texture and sensitive skin. This personal struggle inspired me to develop products specifically tailored to meet these needs. Maneuver is more than just a grooming brand; it's about empowering a community. We aim to create a space where men and women can feel confident and take pride in their appearance while stepping into leadership roles within their communities. Our mission is to revolutionize the beauty industry by highlighting the stories and craftsmanship of BIPOC artisans and designers, ensuring that our products not only solve problems but also celebrate the rich diversity of our cultures. 2. What does wellness mean to you? Wellness, to me, is about balance, balancing the demands of life with the needs of your body and mind. It's about being intentional in how you care for yourself, from what you eat to how you manage stress, to the products you use on your skin. Wellness isn't just about looking good; it's about feeling good from the inside out and creating habits that support long-term health and well-being. Describe your skincare routine. My skincare routine is quite basic but effective. I start with a good face wash to cleanse away the impurities and any excess oil from the day. Following that, I use a toner to help balance my skin's pH and prepare it for the next step. Finally, I apply a moisturizer to keep my skin hydrated and protected throughout the day. It's simple, but consistency is key, and it works well for me. 3. What is your favorite aspect of the cosmetic industry? My favorite aspect of the cosmetic industry is the power of storytelling. It's not just about the products themselves but the stories behind the ingredients, the brands, and, most importantly, the people who use them. Each product tells a unique narrative, whether it's about the natural origins of an ingredient, the cultural significance behind a brand, or the personal journeys of our customers. These stories connect us, inspire us, and give deeper meaning to the everyday routines that make us feel our best. 4. What was your biggest challenge when starting up? When starting out, one of the biggest challenges we faced was ensuring that we only partnered with individuals and organizations that truly shared our values. We were blessed that many people saw and loved our mission and vision, but it was crucial to align with those who genuinely understood and supported our commitment to empowering our community and revolutionizing the beauty industry. It required careful consideration and sometimes tough decisions to stay true to our core principles while building the brand. 5. What are your tips for other entrepreneurs? The road ahead is tough, and it's filled with uncertainty. You'll be challenged in ways you never expected, and there will be times when you question everything you're doing. But my advice is this: if this is truly what you want to do, make a promise to yourself that you'll find a way to get it done, no matter what. Embrace both the successes and the failures as part of your journey. Every setback is a learning opportunity, and every challenge is a chance to grow. Stay resilient, stay focused, and keep pushing forward, even when the path seems unclear.
