At the cutting edge of sustainable ocean technology, MediSea Robotics is pioneering intelligent, modular robotics designed to serve the evolving needs of the blue economy. Founded by Dr. rer. nat. Joseph Ambrose Pagaran, a scientist and innovator with a passion for ocean regeneration, MediSea Robotics is more than a robotics company—it’s a vision for a smarter, more circular marine future. Through a modular design philosophy, AI-driven autonomy, and a mission rooted in the UN’s 5Ps—People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, Profit, and Partnership—MediSea is reshaping how aquaculture, seaweed farming, and environmental monitoring are approached. As a sponsor of Beauty by the Sea, MediSea will demonstrate how robotics can enable regenerative beauty—transforming raw kelp into skincare, data into insight, and sustainable harvesting into a wellness experience. In this exclusive interview, we dive into how the company is using scalable automation to create impact across industries, all while putting people and the planet first. 1. You mentioned that MediSea Robotics uses modular robotics technology aligned with the 5 Ps—People, Planet, Prosperity, Profit and Partnership. Could you explain how each of these pillars informs your product development and company culture?
Here’s how MediSea Robotics bakes the 5Ps—People, Planet, Prosperity, Profit, Partnership—into both our product decisions and our day‑to‑day culture:
2. Who are your target users, and how is MediSea Robotics different from other modular robotics companies? We’re a B2B industrial company focused on the blue economy—not consumer or clinical robotics. Our primary users include seaweed and aquaculture operators, marine research institutes, and the insurers and financiers who require site-level data. What sets MediSea apart is that we don’t just offer modular hardware—we build a full ecosystem: AI, data architecture, plug-and-play hardware, and scalable orchestration software. Through EU blue economy funding pathways, we can de-risk pilot deployments and scale faster than traditional robotics firms. 3. As a sponsor of Beauty by the Sea, how does MediSea Robotics align with the event’s focus on beauty and wellness? We’re excited to show how sustainable automation intersects with blue beauty. At Beauty by the Sea, MediSea will eventually introduce an immersive “Sea-Beauty Lab” where technology meets touch. On the pier, our compact crawler will harvest demo kelp while edge-AI systems track growth and stream data in real time. Inside, beauty brand formulators will turn that fresh seaweed into skincare treatments, highlighting how marine polysaccharides like fucoidan and laminarin scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), enhance skin elasticity, and fight photoaging. It’s a powerful demonstration --future‑facing-- of how sea robotics can enable regenerative wellness—from farm-bot to face cream. 4. Tell us about your system’s modularity—how flexible is it across different applications?
MediSea Robotics supports four levels of modularity, ensuring scalability across sectors:
This means you can swap a harvesting tool for a camera boom, add a hyperspectral scanner, or deploy new modules across fleets without starting from scratch. Our system isn’t just modular—it’s built for true cross-industry adaptability. 5. What’s next for MediSea Robotics over the next 12–24 months? Our roadmap focuses on field pilots, commercial deployments, and scaling with partners. We’re targeting TRL 6–8 via EU blue economy programs like SBEP, EMFAF, and Horizon Europe, with potential support from BlueInvest. While aquaculture is our launch sector, we’re also exploring applications in port infrastructure, offshore energy, and environmental monitoring. We welcome collaboration across industries where sustainable automation and ocean intelligence can create value.
