1. Tell us about your company? What inspired you to get into the cosmetic ingredients industry?
For Naturally Australian Products’ CEO, Robyn Ingersole, her company is the product of decades work across the ingredients industry combined with a passion for herbalism and a close relationship to the farm. “I’ve always been very in touch with the Earth, and as I gained experience from my own essential oils range, that lead me to farming, manufacturing and formulating personal care ranges. I saw the need for more honest ingredients and originally launched NAP to take our Organic Tea Tree Oil throughout North America, and quickly saw the need to source other affordable ingredients with integrity,” Robyn tells.
Jenbrook Farms, NAP’s mother company, purchased 1,247 acres of wild-crafted Tea Tree farm in 1988 and a further 1,000 acres in 2012, which they have converted to 100% organic. Although NAP’s genuine Australian Tea Tree Essential Oil is one of their most coveted ingredients, they also produce and source other Essential Oils, Hydrosols, Absolutes, Carrier Oils, Butters, Waxes, Exfoliants, Cellular Extracts, CO2 Plant Extracts and Powders from trusted suppliers around the world who are just as committed to Earth care as they are.
With their North American distribution hub based in Santa Clarita, California, NAP has developed a streamlined supply for a range of both cosmetic and food grade ingredients for health, wellness and beauty brands around the U.S. and Canada. In one chat with Robyn, you immediately can tell that NAP is not just a business for her - it's her passion.
2. What makes your ingredients unique? Tell us more about Australian ingredients?
Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia is probably Australia’s most known native essential oil, but how many of those oils can you name exactly where they’re grown, harvested and distilled? That’s the NAP difference. NAPs farm is home to ancient Tea tree mother trees and is located in the birthplace of the Australian Tea Tree Industry, the Bungawalbyn Valley Basin. Renowned for its nutrient-rich soil, it’s surrounded by the pristine Bungawalbyn National Forest in Northern Rivers, New South Wales. Further, the oil’s long-term distillation process ensures that all beneficial compounds are extracted to their maximum level of purity.
NAPs other ingredients are carefully picked from pure sources around the world, ensuring the most premium quality. While NAP’s roots are in the Tea Tree industry, they source a wide range of products from meticulously vetted farms and wild-harvesters. Not only are the traceable sources a major point of difference from most suppliers, but the documentation and scientific innovation behind NAP’s ingredients offers brands more information for enhanced formulations and backstories that connect to Australia’s pristine environment.
3. Is your ingredient sustainable?
We believe that everything is connected and that how we treat our bodies is just as important as how we treat our Earth. We take a holistic view in sourcing our ingredients, invested in how they are grown and manufactured because we are ultimately committed to healing solutions, not just for humans, but for the entire planet, because we are one in the same. With this Tea
Tree Oil you have received, you can trust that it is single-origin, grown and distilled from our farm.
From the old-growth forest, NAP sustainably hand-harvests from the native trees that grow wild, ensuring no pesticide or chemical residues. The species’ unique compound profile acts as a natural pesticide, a built-in mechanism for sustainability. While there are approved chemicals for ‘Organic’ farming, NAP prefers to use mechanical soil disturbance for weed control and where possible, conduct harvesting before insect colonies have a chance to develop. NAP’s farm, The Jenbrook Plantation, is also in the process of returning spent mulch (distillation by-products) into the rows to increase the soil’s bio-mass and soil quality to improve the flow of rain water and nutrients.
NAP’s ecoV™ Certified Organic Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) stands in a category of its own, thus the need to create a new certification! NAP’s proprietary ecoV™ standard ensures the highest quality oil, grown in a completely organic environment, and the result of a rigorous long-term distillation. In addition, NAP’s ingredients are accredited by Oregon Tilth Organic Certification, USDA Organic, FDA registered and Australian Certified Organic.
4. What types of formulas benefit from adding the ingredient from the ChemBox? Which ingredient can it replace?
Any formulas that have used chemically manufactured antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal ingredients can benefit from Naturally Australian Products’ Tea Tree Oil, which offer those properties, but naturally. Tea Tree Oil has been a medicine-cabinet staple for years, a quick go-to for bug bites, acne, lice, etc., but with the rising demand for vegan, plant-based personal care, Tea Tree Oil is more common than ever before.
Delivering hundreds of compounds, many of which are unknown, its benefits range from antimicrobial, antifungal, antiseptic, expectorant, fungicide, stimulant, antibacterial, immunostimulant, and so much more! Tea Tree oil's major active component is terpinen-4-ol (typically 30-48%), which is largely responsible for Tea Tree oil's antibacterial and antifungal properties.
5. What is one thing that you could change in the cosmetics industry?
Robyn’s one wish for the Cosmetics industry is to “Combine inner beauty with outer beauty.” With so much focus on superficial appearance, we see the shift to more conscious, natural and clean beauty solutions as a response to craving something deeper and more meaningful. The growth in values-based beauty brands shows that “beauty” can be embraced at any age, by any gender, and defined by not how we look, but by how we look out for each other and the planet.
