Get to Know Your Supplier
1. Tell Us About Your Company? What Inspired You To Get Into The Cosmetic Ingredient Industry?
Biolie is a French company specialized in the enzymatic extraction of natural ingredients for different markets. Biolie has developed and patented an eco-process as an alternative to hexane extraction (hexane being a CMR). With this eco and clean process, 4 ranges of ingredients have been developed, actives, natural coloured oils, vegetable oils and botanical extracts. Most of those ingredients are based on the valorization of coproducts. The idea was to valorize natural raw material that was not used as food.
2. Is Your Ingredient Sustainable? Are The Raw Materials Locally Acquired in France?
All our ingredients are produced in our plant, located in the East of France, with our patented eco-process. Ruby Red is obtained with this process, without any solvent. The alkanet root is ground and extracted with water and food-grade, non-GMO enzymes. During the process, organic sunflower oil is added to capture the alkannin (lipophilic red-coloured molecule) that Is released from the alkanet root.
The alkanet root is collected wild in Albania and Pakistan, in compliance with Nagoya protocol
3. What Types of Formulas Benefit From Adding the Ingredient From the ChemBox?
From a regulatory point of view, Ruby Red is a natural lipophilic plant extract (not a dye), certified by Cosmos, 99% organic PPAI. Ruby Red is used to bring properties and natural colour in cosmetic formulation. Ruby Red can be used as a clean and vegan alternative to carmine red. Ruby Red brings red colour in oil and pink to red colour in an emulsion. It can be used in any kind of formulation accepting a lipophilic fraction: emulsion, solid cosmetics, powders, bi-phase, surfactant-based products (shampoo, shower gel), oil for face, body and/or hair etc…
4. Tell Us About Your Upcycled Ingredients?
Most of our ingredients are based on the Upcycling concept, valorization of co-products, like ugly fruits and vegetables, seeds without germination power, cut waste from the food industry. Biolie is specialized in sourcing coproducts and offers tailor-made development without MOQ.
5. What is One Thing That You Could Change in the Cosmetics Industry?
Solvents are often used to extract “natural ingredients”. Not all of them are clean or sustainable. By using water and enzymes, we avoid solvents and petrochemical derivatives. This patented eco-process is also run at controlled temperature (around 50°C/122°F), decreasing the carbon imprint from the process. Then, we valorize our wastes (unused fractions) into energy (via methanization) or compost (via composted on the company site, to avoid carbon imprint from transport). Most of the raw materials we use to produce our ingredients are sourced less than 300kms (~186 miles) from the company. We, at Biolie, think that taking care of the environment is of huge importance for everyone, including companies. As a company, we try to reduce, as much as possible, our imprint on the environment.
