Get To Know Your Supplier
1. Tell us about your company? What inspired you to get into the cosmetic ingredient industry?
Argile Eau Mer was founded over 25 years ago. Its primary business was researching and promoting Manicouagan mineral clay. In 2018 new partners acquired the company and renamed it AEM Lab to grow sales and develop effectiveness tests for the beauty industry. We now promote this sea mineral complex under the name Manicouagan Sea Minerals, and market it as a sterilized powder for cosmetic solutions, as a sterilized mud for spas, and we market the sterilized water for other cosmetic formulations.
What attracted us to this industry was the natural power of this amazing ingredient for the skin, and the unique history of its composition – it was formed by a meteorite impact 214 million years ago. For more, refer to the attached document “Brochure Manicouagan”. (Annexe 1) In the early days in the late 1990s, the Saulnier/Boulianne family wanted to use the clay for a thalassotherapy centre. After several early studies, the first owners realized that the project would also be valuable for the cosmetics industry as well as thalassotherapy. For more details, find our studies in the attached. (Annexe 2) Learn more about the synergy of the four types of clay, minerals and organic matter that are naturally contained in this unique marine mud.
2. Tell us about your Mineral Sea Clay and what makes it special?
Manicouagan clay is extracted from under a protective layer of peat on the Manicouagan Peninsula (Quebec, Canada) along the edge of the Saint Lawrence River. Its mineral and chemical composition is a result of erosion and deposits of different sediments that have been transported by the Manicouagan and Outarde rivers to the peninsula. Manicouagan clay is a unique material because its mineral structure comprises clay and non-clay forms. This unique chemical composition gives it many cosmetic uses (e.g., as an abrasive agent, absorbent agent, opacifier, colourant). The microelements and mineral salts in Manicouagan clay are highly sought after for a healthy human body. Manicouagan clay also contains organic matter (chlorophyll, carotenoids, phycoerythrin, phycocyanin, allophycocyanin and humic acid) with excellent cosmetic properties (e.g., antioxidant, detoxifying, anti-ageing). For more details, refer to the attached document “Material Overview”. (Annexe 3)
3. What types of formulas benefit from adding this Clay?
Manicouagan clay can be added to a wide range of cosmetic formulas: moisturizing formulas (an effectiveness test has been conducted on the moisturizing properties of Manicouagan clay, see attached), formulas for oily skin (an effectiveness test has been conducted on the sebum regulating properties of Manicouagan clay, see attached). You can also use Manicouagan clay in many products to boost their effectiveness: creams, cleaners, matte-look powders, masks, poultices, lip care formulas, hair care, and foot treatments.
4. Is your ingredient sustainable?
Yes, Manicouagan clay is a sustainable ingredient. You can find the production process attached. (Annexe 4) No synthetic substances are used in the process. It complies with the COSMOS standard, certified by ECOCERT. The certificate is attached. (Annexe 5) In addition, the company and its clay deposits are in the Manicouagan-Uapishka World Biosphere Reserve, managed by UNESCO. The clay is extracted with a high level of environmental concern. The company also has a sustainability policy from the reserve (RMBMU), which it has been following since 2010. In terms of sustainability, we estimate there are over 1,000 generations of clay deposits available.
5. What is one thing that you could change in the cosmetics industry?
We offer a completely natural solution with our mineral complex and mineral water. They can respond to many cosmetic problems (e.g., dry skin, oily skin, absorbent solutions) and health problems (e.g., sore muscles, pain). Our ingredient can be used on its own or as an additive to boost cosmetic formulas. We also have a unique history. Manicouagan Sea Minerals is an ingredient of the future because it offers THE BEST OF NATURE FOR SUSTAINABLE BEAUTY TREATMENT SOLUTIONS.
