Uniting Canadian Cosmetics and Bringing it to the World
Relevant Laboratories is the perfect example of a modern cosmetic lab that combines science, innovation, and the best of customer service. Eliane Treadwell is the founder and lead chemist. Her expertise shines bright as she illuminates her customers and followers about cosmetic science and the beauty industry. We spoke to Eliane about her cosmetic journey and formulating career. 1. Tell us about your cosmetic industry journey? My journey started when I was in high school. I took a cosmetology class and I fell in love with the science behind the products. My high school chemistry teacher discovered that I had a natural gift in science and math and he encouraged me to pursue a career in science and that's how it all began. 2. What is your favourite part of being a formulator? Developing a formula that actually works! When it comes to formulation there's much trial and error. However, when you finally create the perfect formula that your client love, it's like heaven. Seeing the joy on your client's face or hearing the excitement in their voice is worth it all. 3. Do you have any cosmetic ingredient favourites at the moment? Emulfsiers has my heart. I have been formulating emulsions like crazy as of lately. So, when a supplier sends me new emulfsiers I'm like a kid in a candy store. I'm also loving surfactants. 4. What is one thing you wish people would know before creating their own skincare line?
I love when a brand has a clear vision. Brand owners underesitmate the power of vision. When I meet with an brand owner and I ask them about their company, I listen to their vision. Vision (and their product brief) is my roadmap when I sitdown to write a formula, when I choose what raw materials I'm going to use. The vision of a brand decides the texture, feel, scent, and overall look of the finished product. I can create a great product for you, but if you don't have a vision for your brand, your brand will be another brand on the market. 5. Can you possibly share your beauty routine? I have a pretty simple routine. I cleanse, treat, moisture, and protect twice a day. 6. Does being a Chemist change how you use products? Yes! I will easily spend hours in the aisles of stores reading claims and labels. I love trying new innovation and I am sucker for a good texture and a great scent. Working with different types of raw materials allows me to see what my skin likes and dislikes. So, when I'm in the store I know what to purchase.
